It’s Week 14 on the NFL schedule and the Washington Redskins will be hitting the road once again as they travel to one of the historical landmarks in the NFL. The Redskins face the Green Bay Packers at iconic Lambeau Field and do so the winners of two straight. As has been the case all season long, Washington enters the contest as 14.5 point underdogs. The spread is the largest among all Week 14 NFL games.
Washington’s young players have led the way with a resurgent attitude that has displayed plenty of talent. Their determination has garnered attention from the team’s fanbase. A strong outing against the Packers (9-3) would serve further notice that the Redskins future on the field might not be as bleak as it appeared just a few weeks ago.
The Redskins (3-9) will be looking for their third straight win and also three straight victories over NFC opponents since Weeks 6-8 of the 2018 season. Those wins last year were over the Panthers (23-17), Dallas Cowboys (20-17) and New York Giants (23-13).
Also, the Redskins will be attempting to beat the Packers for the third straight time which would mark the second time in franchise history that they have won three consecutive contests over Green Bay. The feat would be the first time since the 1974-79 seasons.
The game has playoff implications for both teams. Washington’s faint hopes are still alive in the horrid NFC East division, but they will be playing the role of spoiler to the Packers playoff seeding and NFC North division championship hopes. Green Bay enters the game in first place in the division and would be the No. 3 seed and host a home game if the NFC playoffs started today.
Washington would need for the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles to lose out and for them to win out in order to reach the postseason. To say that is likely scenario would be an unrealistic reach.
What Would a Redskins Win Over the Packers Mean?
Redskins Interim coach Bill Callahan spoke about how he’s preparing his young team for an environment like the one Lambeau Field presents while speaking to the media from the INOVA Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park.
“You do the best you can with your environment that you can create in practice and you try to bring that to the game,” Callahan said. “It’s still 22 players on the field. Focus, concentration, energy – those aspects are still critical in any game, no matter where you’re playing. Lambeau is a great place to play, it’s got great tradition. I respect it. I coached at the University of Wisconsin for five years and had the opportunity to go there quite often. It’s a great place and a great place to play a football game. I know from the players’ perspective, you try to give them as much knowledge and information you can about the environment that they’re ready to get into and that’s what we’ve been doing over the last 24 hours, just get them mentally prepared for the environment and for the conditions and whatever could possibly happen.”
