Week 1 of Redskins Training Camp 2014 is in the books

RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington Redskins’ players reported to Richmond a week ago today for the 2014 training camp at Bon Secours training camp. Since then, the team has made just a couple of tweaks to the current roster.

On Sunday they have waived linebacker Brandon Jenkins and put offensive lineman Maurice Hurt back on the regular roster. The second year player had arrived at camp out of shape and was on the Active/Non-Football Injury list. But he finally passed a physical and can now practice with the team.

On Monday the Redskins announced that they had signed free agent linebacker Everette Brown (terms of the deal were not disclosed at the time).

Brown (6’1”, 263 lbs.) was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 38 career games with three starts for the Panthers (2009 to 2011), the San Diego Chargers (2011 to 2012), the Detroit Lions for the latter part of the 2012 season; and finally the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in 2013.

For his career, Brown has recorded 59 tackles (42 solo) with seven sacks, four forced fumbles, three passes defended and an interception. Last season, he appeared in seven games for the Cowboys and notched a sack in his season debut vs. Minnesota in Week 9.

The journeyman played collegiately at Florida State from 2005 to 2008 and appeared in 41 games with 25 starts. As a junior in 2008, Brown earned first-team All-ACC and second-team All-America honors after finishing third in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 13.5 sacks. He exited Florida State ranking fifth in Seminoles history with 23 career sacks.

Free agent defensive end Jake McDonough was signed earlier in the week (again, terms of the deal were not disclosed).

McDonough (6’5”, 305 lbs., Iowa State) originally signed with the New York Jets as a college free agent after the 2013 NFL draft. He was waived by the team in July and then signed with the Indianapolis Colts, being placed on the practice squad in December. He was waived by the Colts in February 2014.

The defensive lineman was a Cyclone from 2008 to 2012, appearing in 39 games with 26 starts. As a senior, he helped hold the school’s opponents to 23.9 points per game, the third-fewest in the conference, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors from the conference’s coaches.

Lastly, the Redskins waived injured cornerback Courtney Bridget, Jr. (6’3”, 195 lbs.), who signed with the team as a college free agent on May 17, 2014.
