Da mon Cromartie-Smith RS

RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent safety Da’Mon (Day-mun) Cromartie-Smith and waived cornerback Peyton Thompson. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In addition, the team announced that defensive end Jason Hatcher has passed a physical and no longer appears on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

Cromartie-Smith (6-2, 203) entered the league as a college free agent on April 26, 2010. In four years across the 2010-13 seasons, he split time between the Pittsburgh Steelers’ active roster and practice squads. He appeared in 10 games as a member of the Steelers, making his NFL debut on Dec. 8, 2011 vs. Cleveland and being credited by the league with four special teams tackles, according to STATS, LLC.

Cromartie-Smith played collegiately from 2005-09 at UTEP, where he appeared in 46 games with 34 starts for the Miners. He compiled 306 tackles, four interceptions and two sacks during his collegiate career, earning first-team All-Conference USA honors as a senior in 2009.

Cromartie-Smith, 27, attended Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, Calif., where he posted 106 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble as a senior in 2004. He was born on Feb. 19, 1987.

Thompson (5-10, 180) originally joined the Redskins as a practice squad member on Nov. 26, 2013.
