Ashburn, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have waived linebacker Gabe Miller and nose tackle Robert Thomas.
Miller, a second-year player out of Oregon State University, was originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He signed with the Redskins this past off-season and has primarily been used on special teams.
Having played tight end and defensive end in college, Kansas City converted him to a linebacker. In September of 2012, he signed with the Seattle Seahawks and went back to being a tight end on their practice squad. The journeyman player next went to the Chicago Bears but was suspended for four games by the league for violating the league’s substance policy. By the end of August that year, he was released and in December was picked up by the Redskins where he was converted back to the linebacker position. Miller competed for a roster spot with Everette Brown, who he eventually beat out. This season, he was active for all four of the regular season games the team has played although he mostly was used on the aforementioned special teams.
Thomas is an undrafted rookie out of the University of Arkansas. He signed with the Redskins in May of 2014 and was on practice squad at the start of the season. The nose tackle had just gotten promoted to the 53-man roster on Thursday just before the Redskins played the New York Giants but he was inactive for the contest.
As of this writing, neither of the roster spots vacated by Miller and Thomas has been filled. The word is that the Redskins may use this long break between last Thursday’s game against the Giants and next week’s Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks to upgrade the special teams unit with new players.
Hail.
