Tom Wilson will be lighter in the wallet ahead of his 21st birthday, which he will celebrate on Sunday, March 29.

The National Hockey League (NHL) announced that Washington Capitals 6’4” 210 lbs. right winger Tom Wilson has been fined $2,000 for embellishment. Wilson’s fine comes from an embellishment penalty he received during the game on March 19 versus the Minnesota Wild.

With 5:15 remaining in the second period, Wilson took what appeared to be a punch to the neck from Wild left winger Zach Parise. Parise was called for roughing and Wilson was called for embellishment on the play.

While this was Wilson’s first actual fine from the NHL for this type of infraction, he has received warnings for embellishment in the past, one of which was against the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 1.

Wilson’s 159 penalty minutes on the season currently leads the Capitals. The next closest Washington players in penalties minutes are defenseman Brooks Orpik and center Michael Latta who are tied with 58 penalty minutes each.

Wilson ranks forth in the league in penalty minutes.

The Capitals are the seventh most penalized team in the NHL with 327 total penalties and 777 penalty minutes.
