Ashburn, Va. – The Washington Redskins have announced the signing of free agent running back Mack Brown. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. This brings the number of backs currently on the roster to seven including Alfred Morris, Chris Thompson, Silas Redd, Matt Jones, Trey Williams and Darrel Young (if a fullback is included in this group). Morris will stay the starter in offensive line coach Bill Callahan’s new power running scheme but competition for his “partner in crime” — likely a third-down-pass-catching-out-of-the-backfield partner — will be tight.
Brown (5’11”, 214 lbs.) originally entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Houston Texans on May 11, 2015. He was waived by the Texans on June 2.
The former Gator appeared in 49 career games at Florida across the 2010-14 seasons, gaining 805 career yards on 210 rushing attempts with four rushing touchdowns. Last season, he appeared in all 12 games for Florida and served as a key member of the Gators’ special teams unit. This makes it no surprise that he was brought here to Washington what with the emphasis General Manager Scot McCloughan and Head Coach Jay Gruden have place on upgrading this unit.
Brown, 23, attended Martin Luther King Jr. H.S. in Lithonia, Ga., where he rushed for more than 1,700 combined yards with 20 touchdowns across his junior and senior seasons. He was born on Sept. 24, 1991.
It will be interesting to watch the running back during training camp — if he’s still on the team — when the Redskins have the Texans in for joint practices.
