This past Sunday the Atlanta Falcons signed veteran safety Dashon Goldson after working out for the team. Head Coach Dan Quinn made it clear the veteran would have to accept a backup role if he signs.

“We’ve been very clear about what we’re looking for,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “[Goldson] knows what his role is going to be for us, and that’s very important.”

A former Pro Bowler, Goldson was traded from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Washington Redskins in April 2015. In his single season with that team, Goldson started in 15 games and recorded 69 tackles. He also had one interception which he returned for a touchdown.

With their starting rookie strong safety Keanu Neal out for at least 2-3 games come the regular season (right knee injury), the Falcons had to make a move to secure a quality player that could come in and make a difference.

Quinn has made it very clear that backup DB Kemal Ishmael will fill in for Neal as the starter but Goldson can add more than just depth for this team.

The 31-year-old (out of the University of Washington) brings a lot of experience to a young secondary. His hard-hitting style and his attention to detail will pay dividends for a defense that has looked strong in its pass rush during the preseason.

Goldson is a solid pick up for this ballclub and will provide them a reliable player that can be called on to do much more if need be.
