The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Washington Redskins 23-17 in their first preseason game of 2016. In tonight’s game against the Cleveland Browns, the starters will likely play a bit longer than they did against Washington… probably well into the second quarter. This should help them establish a rhythm.
Last week the Falcons were put in a tough situation in their first drive, backed up inside the two-yard-line. In fact, two consecutive series that did not go well for Atlanta’s offense warranted the extensive criticism that rained down on them.
Against the Browns, look for Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to get QB Matt Ryan comfortable by establishing a running game and use some short-to-intermediate throws to get the unit into a rhythm. Looking lackluster last week against a Washington defense that many think might be one of the league’s better squads, the quarterback will have to do a better job of getting the passing game going despite whatever situation is at hand.
Keep a close eye on the wide receivers that are battling for the No. 3 spot on the roster. Aldrick Robinson had a tremendous performance last week with three receptions for 118 yards. He looks to be a sure lock as the slot guy for Atlanta. It will also be interesting to see Justin Hardy, Eric Weems and Devin Fuller progress and work to make the 53-man roster.
Another area to watch tonight is the tight end position which has been an area of weakness since the departure of All-Pro TE Tony Gonzalez. Jacob Tamme could be a feasible option when healthy but rookie tight end Austin Hooper should be watched as well.
Hooper’s involvement in the Falcon’s offense could end up being hugely important to their success so his growth in the system will be vital .
If Atlanta wants to contend for a division title this season, Ryan will need to have a full complement of weapons at his disposal. Depth at key positions is essential to a ballclub’s success and makes it much more difficult to defend.
Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn will be looking for the gems on his roster to shine tonight against the Browns.
