Dallas Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has played exceptionally well in his first two regular seasons games. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones and Head Coach Jason Garrett will have a tough decision regarding the future of the franchise once veteran starting QB Tony Romo recovers from his recent injury.
Will they stay with the rookie or re-insert the former starter when he’s healthy?
Prescott, who completed 22 of 30 passes for 292 yards in the Cowboys’ 27-23 win over the Washington Redskins recently, is starting while Romo recovers from a broken bone in his back. It will be eight weeks before Romo is able to return to the field.
Jerry Jones said that as soon as his vet is ready to play however, he’ll be in the lineup.
“Not necessarily, not necessarily,” Jones said to reporters when asked if Prescott’s performance would cause him to be patient with Romo’s return. “Tony’s situation, when he’s back, will be about whether he’s functional. We’re a better team. We play better.”
But if the Cowboys are playing winning football with Prescott leading the offense, should Jones still simply hand the keys back to Romo?
Would a smart staff consider interrupting the chemistry that has been built… especially if they are playing winning football?
Timing and rhythm are important for a quarterback and his wide receivers to have success. When both are on the same page it can maximize their efficiency in the passing game.
“A number of different things came up throughout the game and he just handles it with poise and composure,” Garrett said of Prescott. “He gives us a chance to execute on ball plays because the demeanor that he plays which is infectious throughout our team. Guys see that and respond to that.”
Tony Romo is no doubt a guy that Jerry Jones loves, but the GMS needs to bear in mind what’s best for business. If Prescott is winning games and has the Cowboys in a position to make the playoffs, it would be absurd to spoil the success of this team.
