The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free-agent defensive lineman Caleb Brantley just after releasing third-year defensive lineman Anthony Lanier II who was designated as injured.

The Redskins also signed defensive tackle Caushaud Lyons and quarterback Nic Shimonek to their practice squad.

Brantley is the big name. He was surprisingly released by the Cleveland Browns after appearing in 12 games last season. He recorded 18 tackles and two sacks during his rookie campaign.

Brantley was a star player for the University of Florida and was drafted in the six-round by the Browns. His draft grade was projected by some anywhere between the first-round or the third-round but a domestic issue dropped his status.

While at Florida, Brantley was a second-team All-SEC selection in 2016.

Lanier was released after dealing with a hip flexor. He missed practice on Sunday.

In two seasons with the Redskins, the former Alabama A&M product recorded five sacks. All of those came last season.
