The Washington Redskins announced today that they have released veteran defensive lineman Ziggy Hood.

The move may seem like an initial shock but the Redskins have undertaken a youth movement across their defensive front with starters Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Matt Ioannidis having a total combined six years of NFL experience between them.

The Redskins also have reserves Tim Settle and Caleb Brantley, as well as Stacy McGee who is eligible to return to practice this week from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list.

Alex Smith is a major factor in Redskins early season success

Hood was well respected by the team and was a locker room leader. He is 31 years of age, however, and the Redskins seem intent to get more game time looks from players who need to stop opponents run game.

Hood who played his college ball at Missouri was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 32nd overall pick in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. He also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears.

Over his eight-year career, Hood has amassed 197 combined tackles, 13.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and five recovered fumbles.
