Pro Football Focus, a national website known for its in-depth analysis, grades and metrics on NFL players and teams (among other things), recently released its 2018 Midseason All-Pro Team. Washington Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger made that team and, in fact, was given the overall grade of 90.9… which is very impressive.

Of the Washington defensive back, PFF author Michael Renner wrote:

There isn’t much Swearinger hasn’t done at a high level this season. His four picks are the most of any safety in the league while his seven coverage stops rank sixth at the position. Swearinger is also the fourth highest-graded safety in run defense at 78.4.

Swearinger’s grade and accolades are justified. Since the time he arrived in Washington, he has been a leader in the locker room, a motivator for both offensive and defensive players and a guy who produces on the field. His work ethic is beyond reproach and the way he handles his physical recovery/care could make some body builders and athletes feel like slugs.

Certainly, no NFL player is perfect. But as a member of defensive coordinator Greg Manusky’s unit, Swearinger has pushed for intense practices and for teammates to take the best care of themselves possible when not on the practice field or in meeting rooms.

Swearinger’s philosophies are paying off on the game-day field because, as of last week’s Week 7 win over the New York Giants, the University of South Carolina alum has recorded four interceptions, seven passes defended, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a sack, a QB hit and 35 tackles. He is a vocal leader that doesn’t just tell teammates how he feels, he shows it on the field. His INTs lead the league for safeties. It will be interesting to watch him now that the team has traded for former Green Bay Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Having the other veteran on the field might free up Swearinger even more to do his thing to opposing offenses.

Look for Swearinger in the 2018 Pro Bowl and as an end-of-season All Pro if things remain on the current course.
