Washington Redskins fans hoping to see starting rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. in his first action against arch-rival Dallas will have to wait until next season.

Haskins suffered an ankle injury in yesterday’s 41-35 overtime loss to the New York Giants and today was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cowboys.

Speaking to the media today at his Monday press conference, Redskins Interim coach Bill Callahan spoke of Haskins being ruled out versus the Cowboys.

“He sustained that ankle injury and he will be ruled out for this Sunday,” Callahan started the presser saying about the injury and timetable for recovery. “I think it’s going to take a couple of weeks from my understanding, but, I think those things always change as the more evaluation and more information they get on it. So I think it will take some time no matter what.”

Callahan discussed what he saw from the young signal-caller over the past few weeks and starts and was complimentary of Haskins’s play.

“I thought he was making great progress and I think we continued to talk about the progress he had made during the course of the last few weeks,” Callahan said. “It was quite substantial and the start that he had in the game yesterday was very impressive. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the chance or opportunity to finish that game. I thought he was getting hot. I thought that he had the great feel for the game, the right reads. He sped through the progressions well. He found the openings very easily. I thought the game came to him very naturally and that’s where we have been going with his progress.”

On the season, in nine games played with seven starts, Haskins has thrown for 1,365 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. In his last two outings, however, Haskins didn’t throw an interception and his sack count went down considerably. His passer ratings over that span were 121.3 and 143.2 along with four touchdown passes.

Selected by the Redskins in the first round (15th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, Haskins heads into the offseason having answered a lot of questions about his growth and ability to lead the Redskins into the future. He should be the penciled in opening day starter for Washington with high hopes among several exciting young players on the roster.

Veteran quarterback Case Keenum will get the start against Dallas with Haskins sidelined.
