The Washington Mystics ended their 2019 season with the ultimate prize of a WNBA Championship but they were unable to fully celebrate due to several team members having immediate obligations to play overseas. While the Washington Capitals and Nationals were able to hoist their championship trophies through the streets of D.C., the Mystics had to put their parade on hold until the spring. Now they will celebrate the right way on Tuesday, May 12th as the Mystics host a championship parade with the support of the Bowser Administration. The parade will begin in front of the National Museum of Women and end at the Capital One Arena.
“This is the beginning of a new tradition in the District of Champions: kicking off a new season with parades and banners,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We will start our Mystics celebration with a parade, then a block party and a banner raising, and then we all know what we need to do – run it back!”
“I’ve always believed nothing brings a city closer together than a winning sports team, so I am thrilled to celebrate the Mystics’ first WNBA championship with the City of Washington, D.C.” said Ted Leonsis, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Chairman and CEO. “This celebration will be something that elevates and unites our community. We want to create something special as a way to say thank you to our fans and to demonstrate to the world why we are the District of Champions.”
The Mystics will continue to celebrate the 2019 championship with fans at a pregame block party on May 16 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. The block party will be held ahead of the season opener against the Los Angeles Sparks, when the team will raise the 2019 championship banner.
