Week 2 of the NFL season has a marquee matchup between two young upstart football teams. The surprising fact is the contest is between the Washington Football Team and the Arizona Cardinals.
Both teams come into Sunday’s game with impressive wins last week over the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. The two aforementioned teams are favorites to win their respective divisions, so the victories by Washington and Arizona were essential to signal change and upward growth.
Washington will need their defense to duplicate the success they had last week against the Eagles if they want to slow down Kyler Murray, DeAndre Hopkins, and the high powered Cardinals offense. Against the Eagles, Washington’s defense was led by Ryan Kerrigan’s two sacks in route to eight overall sacks and two interceptions. Kerrigan was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his exploits.
Arizona saw Murray connect with Hopkins 14 times for 151 yards. Murray produced 230 yards through the air for a touchdown and interception. He also ran for an additional 91 yards on 13 attempts and another touchdown.
Washington will try to gain more continuity from an offensive standpoint as the unit left some plays on the field last week against the Eagles.
Washington has had recent success over the Cardinals, having won two straight over the NFC West team. Those two wins were on September 9, 2018 (24-6), and December 17, 2017 (20-15).
The Cardinals are 7-point favorites at home.
Washington is 3-1 in their last four road openers dating back to 2016 and looks to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2011 when the club defeated the New York Giants and Cardinals to open up the season.
Washington is 77-46-2 all-time against the Cardinals. The 77 wins against the Cardinals are the team’s second-most against any opponent. Both teams have faced one another 125 times, Washington’s third-most games played against any opponent.
