Throughout the first two weeks of the Washington Commanders OTA’s in Ashburn, there have been several headlines on or off the field.
From newly signed quarterback Carson Wentz quickly connecting with rookie wideout Jahan Dotson. To wide receiver Terry McLaurin not being present while he works on getting a new contract done with the team.
Week 1 of OTA’s displayed Dotson’s smooth route running and sure-handed catching ability while on the other side wideout Curtis Samuel — who missed the majority of 2021 — appears to be fully healthy and ready to make a major contribution in 2022. Samuel, who was the big free agent signing last offseason, took to the podium and said he feels “Fast” and “Refreshed” while speaking on his first week of OTA’s.
Offensive Coordinator Scott Turner also speaking on the wideouts and a bit about Mclaurin’s contract situation mentioned the opportunities other guys are getting in that room while Terry is out.
The offense added Wentz who has shown a notable zip on passes and little to no effort on a great deep passing and looks to have an early connection and no hiccups with his new teammates.
On the defensive side of the ball, Chase Young and Montez Sweat missed week one but were back in the building in week two of OTA’s. Sweat’s absence was unknown while Young was rehabbing in Colorado. Only one has hit the field looking to take the next step and adding to a defensive unit that took a big step back last season under Defensive Coordinator Del Rio.
The workouts often cater towards the offense, but the defense has made several plays while showing various looks as versatility heavily impacts the sets Washington will roll out in the fall.
Overall, the team looks loaded with talent atop each position but still pretty thin in terms of depth.
