It was a wild week in free agency for the Washington Commanders, and the direction of the roster is starting to come into focus.
In the latest episode of Commander Daily, Bob Matthews breaks down how general manager Adam Peters approached the offseason and why this year’s strategy looks different from the first two seasons of his tenure.
Instead of relying on aging veterans on short-term deals, Washington has been targeting players entering the prime of their careers. Many of the Commanders’ additions came from players finishing their rookie contracts — established contributors whose previous teams simply couldn’t afford to keep them.
The biggest splash came on the defensive line with the addition of Odafe Oweh, who arrives after recording 17.5 sacks over the past two seasons. Oweh is expected to start opposite Dorance Armstrong and provide an immediate strengthening to a pass rush that struggled to generate much of any pressure last year.
Washington also upgraded the middle of its defense with linebacker Leo Chenal, whose sideline-to-sideline range and coverage ability provide a clear improvement of speed and athleticism at the position.
On offense, the Commanders added a versatile weapon in tight end Chig Okonkwo, while running back Rachaad White brings a dynamic pass-catching option out of the backfield for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Washington also agreed to terms to bring Jeremy McNichols back to the team on a one year deal.
Additional signings — including Tim Settle, Nick Cross, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Amik Robertson — continue a clear theme: the Commanders are getting younger, faster, and more athletic across the roster.
But he biggest impact of these moves may come in the NFL Draft.
With several defensive needs addressed in free agency, Washington now has flexibility when the seventh overall pick arrives. The Commanders could still add another defender, target an offensive playmaker, or trade back to build additional draft capital.
Matthews breaks down the full strategy and what it could mean for Washington moving forward in the latest episode below.
