The NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird Motorsports Park is shaping up to deliver early-season drama during the NHRA’s 75th anniversary campaign. From unexpected absences to rising talent, this weekend’s event features several compelling headlines that could define the trajectory of the season.
Buddy Hull Sidelined as Team Prioritizes Rebuild
One of the biggest developments heading into the weekend is the absence of Buddy Hull, who will not compete as his team continues rebuilding following an on-track incident in Gainesville.
After suffering a mechanical failure that forced the team to completely disassemble their Funny Car, the focus has shifted toward ensuring everything is properly repaired rather than rushing back into competition.
“Obviously, this isn’t the news we wanted to share this week,” said Hull. “Anytime you have to sit out a race, it’s tough, especially this early in the season. But at the end of the day, making sure everything is right with the car and that our team is safe is what matters most. We’re not going to rush that process. Matt Bynum and the guys are working hard to make sure we return better than ever.”
Hull also provided an update on his health, crediting his safety equipment for limiting the severity of injuries sustained in the incident.
“My right hand is healing really well, and I’ve been staying in close contact with the NHRA medical team,” said Hull. “I had some minor burns from the fire, but honestly, my Impact firesuit did its job. It could have been a lot worse, so I’m grateful for that.”
While he will not be behind the wheel this weekend, Hull remains engaged with the event and focused on returning soon.
“We’re looking at every option for Pomona right now, including maybe running my Top Fuel dragster,” said Hull. “We’ve got great partners who count on us, and I also want to do my part to help make sure fans are getting full, competitive fields at these events. We’ll make the best decision for everyone involved.”
Shawn Langdon Eyes Another Strong Run in Phoenix
Defending event winner Shawn Langdon enters the weekend looking to continue his impressive track record at Firebird Motorsports Park.
Langdon has quietly built one of the most consistent resumes at this event, reaching the final round in two of the past four years and delivering strong performances across multiple seasons. Despite an early exit at the season opener, confidence remains high within his camp.
“We definitely wanted a different outcome in Gainesville two weeks ago, but one run doesn’t change anything about this Kalitta Air Careers team. We have a great group of guys and a great team. The past is the past; we put that race behind us, and we’re 100 percent focused on this weekend’s race.”
His familiarity with the Phoenix track has been a key factor in his success, and he is aiming to maintain that momentum.
“We’ve had success in Phoenix the last few years, so we definitely want to keep the trend going. It just seems like we get good results at some tracks, and fortunately, Phoenix has been one of those tracks lately. We’re just gonna keep trying to make good runs, and then hopefully we can get another win there. Sometimes, there’s really no particular reason – things just go your way.”
Dylan Winefsky Ready for Breakthrough Opportunity
Another storyline to watch is the continued development of Dylan Winefsky, who is preparing for his Phoenix debut in the Funny Car ranks.
Winefsky showed promise during his rookie campaign and enters the new season with increased confidence and support. His preparation during the offseason, combined with hands-on experience in multiple racing environments, has positioned him as a driver to watch.
“We feel really good heading into the Arizona Nationals,” said Winefsky. “We have a lot of support, and I am ready to get back into this Nitro Moose Funny Car. Last year I learned so much and now I want to build on that. The Nitro Funny Car class has gotten even tougher, but I feel good about our chances.”
Competing at a familiar venue adds another layer of motivation for the Arizona-based driver, who is eager to turn preparation into performance.
As the NHRA season continues to build momentum, these three storylines highlight the blend of adversity, experience, and emerging talent that defines the sport. From Hull’s resilience to Langdon’s consistency and Winefsky’s potential, the Arizona Nationals promise to deliver another chapter of high-speed competition and compelling narratives.
