Washington Redskins’ owner Daniel M. Snyder announced his intention to support the Washington Olympic Committee in bringing the 2024 summer Olympics to the nation’s capital. In a statement released by the team, he said:

“We look forward to assisting the Washington Olympic Committee in presenting the nation’s capital and fabulous surrounding region to the Olympic sporting world.

“We are fortunate to have most of the venues needed in an internationally recognized city that is accustomed to staging high-profile events.”

The last time the Summer Games were held in the United States was in 1996 when they were held in Atlanta. The last time the Winter Games were hosted by an American city was when they came to Salt Lake City in 2002.

Washington has some strong contenders to deal with in order to win the bid. Another city hoping to host the 2024 Summer Games is Los Angeles, Ca. L.A. hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984 and so will have experience in the endeavor. According to the Associated Press, San Diego, Ca. wants to host a cross-border Olympics with their Mexican neighbor, Tijuana. Other American opposition could be Philadelphia, Pa. and Tulsa, Okla., who have also expressed and interest in the Games. Other possibilities would be Paris, Rome, Doha (Qatar’s largest city, located on the coast of the Persian Gulf); and a city in South Africa, possibly Durban.

Hail.
