The New York Giants will place running back Andre Brown on injured reserve-designated to return, according to the NFL Network’s Kim Jones.

Brown, who suffered a fractured left leg in the Giants’ preseason finale Thursday night against the New England Patriots, essentially confirmed the report with a tweet:

Brown cannot return to practice until Week 6 and cannot play until after Week 8. Since the Giants’ bye comes in Week 9, he will not be available to play until Week 10 at home against the Oakland Raiders on Nov. 10.

The 2009 draft pick carried the football 73 times for 385 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012. He missed the final six games after breaking his left leg — the same leg he injured Thursday night — last November against the Green Bay Packers.

In an attempt to potentially bolster depth at Brown’s position in his absence, multiple reports indicate that the Giants held workouts for veteran running backs Beanie Wells, Jonathan Dwyer and Leon Washington. It does not appear that a signing is forthcoming in the near future.

With an unproven collection of athletes at the running back position currently on the depth chart — three of whom  have combined for total of 82 NFL carries — it couldn’t hurt to look for more experienced talent on the market.
