Brandon Jacobs will be returning to the New York Giants. According to The Record’s Art Stapleton, a source has confirmed that the former Giants running back will re-sign with his former team.

The need for a running back escalated following a subpar performance from starter David Wilson in the Giants’ season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Wilson fumbled twice and was benched early in the third quarter. His backup, Da’Rel Scott, was not much more impressive after allowing a pass to go off his fingertips and into the arms of Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr, who returned it for the game-sealing touchdown.

Jacobs and former Denver Broncos running back Willis McGahee were both reportedly scheduled for workouts with the Giants on Tuesday.

Jacobs played for the Giants from 2005 to 2011 and holds the franchise record with 56 career touchdowns. He was a key player in each of the Giants’ Super Bowl runs during the 2007 and 2011 seasons.

He carried the football just five times in two games for the San Francisco 49ers last season. He was waived by the team in December after being suspended for the final three games of the regular season following comments about his status with the team.

What Jacobs’ role with the team will be is unknown, but it is believed he could contribute in short-yardage situations, in the red zone and for his pass blocking abilities.

Jacobs, a fourth-round pick by the Giants in 2005 from Southern Illinois, ranks fourth in Giants history with 4,848 rushing yards. In 100 games with the team, he started 48 times and eclipsed 1,000 yards twice in his career.
