According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Washington Redskins requested permission from the New York Giants to speak with defensive coordinator Perry Fewell about their head coaching vacancy.

The New York Daily News’ Ebenezer Samuel confirmed the report and that the Giants have granted the Redskins permission to do so.

The Redskins fired Mike Shanahan from his post as head coach on Monday after three seasons and a win-loss record of 24-40. Fewell is just the latest name on a long list of candidates for the opening.

Fewell has been the subject of interviews before, interviewing with the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans in 2011. He was the interim head coach for the Buffalo Bills during the 2009 season and led them to a 3-4 record.

There has been much speculation about some changes to the coaching staff this offseason, but the majority of it has surrounded offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. It was reported earlier this week that the 62-year-old coach will be fired by the Giants. Fewell, on the otherhand, appears to be safe for his fifth season as the team’s defensive coordinator.
