In the NFL, rivalries are the lifeline of the sport. These heated matchups are steeped in tradition, nostalgia, and the raw passion of fans. Among these rivalries, the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants have shared a competitive history that spans decades. With great victories, heartbreaking defeats, and memorable moments, the Commanders vs. Giants rivalry has solidified its place in NFL history.

The rivalry between Washington and New York has its roots dating back to the early years of the NFL. Both teams were established in the 1930s, with the Giants being one of the league’s founding members in 1925, and the Commanders (formerly known as the Washington Football Team and before that, the Washington Redskins) joining in 1932. From the outset, the competition between these two franchises was fierce, setting the stage for a long and storied rivalry.

Throughout the 20th century, both teams had their periods of dominance. The Giants enjoyed success in the 1950s and 1980s, winning multiple championships, while Washington, under the leadership of legendary coach Joe Gibbs, became a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s and early 1990s; nearly becoming a dynasty. The two teams clashed in several memorable games during these eras, often with playoff implications.

One of the most famous moments in the rivalry’s history came during the 1986 NFL season when the Giants faced Washington in the NFC Championship Game. The Giants won a dramatic game, winning 17-0 and earning a chance to play in Super Bowl XXI. The memory of this game still lingers in the minds of fans from both sides. Who can forget the wind blowing through the tunnel in the old Giants Stadium? Who can forget sure-handed Washington receiver Gary Clark dropping a deep pass that could have possibly scored on the play?

As the years went by, however, the balance of power in the rivalry shifted. The Giants experienced a resurgence in the early 2000s, thanks in no small part to the leadership of head coach Tom Coughlin and the heroics of quarterback Eli Manning. During this period, they managed to capture two Super Bowl titles (Super Bowl XLII and XLVI), both times stunningly defeating the New England Patriots.

In contrast, Washington has struggled to maintain the level of success they enjoyed in the past. Quarterback controversies, coaching changes, and various challenges on and off the field made it difficult for the franchise.

The rivalry between the Commanders and the Giants continues to evolve. In recent years, both teams have seen leadership changes and have been working to rebuild their rosters for the future. Washington now has a new ownership group who hope to return the franchise to those glory years with Gibbs.

One of the most unforgettable moments in the rivalry’s history came in 2012 when rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III led the Commanders to a comeback victory over the Giants. The electrifying performance not only showcased the potential of Griffin but also reignited the passion of Washington fans.

Washington’s name change in 2020 to the Commanders marked a new chapter in the rivalry. As both teams evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of the NFL, the Commanders vs. Giants rivalry remains a fixture on the schedule, continuing to produce old-school NFC East competitive matchups.

Sunday, the rivalry will add to an already impressive list of games. The game is almost a must-win for each team if they are to continue down the trail to becoming a playoff participant.
