The Washington Commanders officially opened rookie minicamp Friday, giving the organization its first extended look at the incoming rookie class and several intriguing undrafted free agents.
In the latest episode of Commanders Daily, Bob Matthews highlighted a handful of players who could quietly make noise as offseason workouts continue.
Before diving into minicamp, Matthews reacted to former Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke announcing his retirement from football. Heinicke became one of the more memorable stories in recent franchise history after helping lead Washington to the playoffs during the 2020 season.
As for minicamp, safety Malik Spencer is one of the names to watch in the secondary. Matthews noted Washington’s safety depth remains fluid behind newly added Nick Cross, potentially opening opportunities for younger players to compete for practice squad spots.
Wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. also drew attention because of his athletic upside and LSU background, while defensive lineman Jeffrey M’Ba fits the bigger body type Washington needs as it transitions further into a 3-4 defensive front.
Matthews also mentioned kicker Drew Stevens as an interesting specialist battle to monitor this summer because of his strong leg and production at Iowa.
The episode also touched on veteran defensive lineman Charles Omenihu reportedly recruiting wide receiver Stefon Diggs toward Washington, adding another layer to the Commanders’ ongoing search for offensive weapons opposite Terry McLaurin.
For now, though, rookie minicamp is about opportunity. Every offseason, a few overlooked names begin building momentum during these early workouts, and Washington’s coaching staff will spend the next several weeks figuring out which young players deserve a longer look heading into training camp.
