No Jalen Hurts, Devonta Smith, Lane Johnson (retirement), Dontayvion Wicks, Tank Bigsby, or Saquan Barkley (at least in the fourth quarter). No wonder the Washington Commanders (2-4-1) dominated Sunday night in a 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Ealges (2-6).
“We had a great week of practice,” wide receiver Antonio Williams said in his post game press conference. “We got off a little slow but once we got to see it rolling, we just picked it up from there.”
Williams was referring to the first quarter, which saw Eagles kicker Jake Moody make a 42 yard field goal to give Philadelphia a 3-0 lead.
Philly’s defense forced a turnover deep in Washington territory when Chig Okonkwo fumbled after catching a pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley then scored on a five yard touchdown run on the team’s next possession.
After that, it was all Washington.
First, the running game started to click behind the trio of Jeremy McNichols, Rashad White, and Austin Eckler. The three (along with quarterback Jayden Daniels) combined for 135 yards on 26 carries for a 5.2 yard average.
Then Daniels rebounded form a slow start to complete 16 throws on 29 attempts for 217 yards and one touchdown. More importantly, he didn’t throw and interception and finished the game without injury.
Washington got its first points on a 56 yard field goal from rookie kicker Drew Stevens. After missing his first attempt from 55 yards, he drilled his second attempt to start the rally.
Daniels would lead the offense on an 11 play, 89 yard drive that ended with an 8 yard throw to Stefon Diggs in the end zone to tie the score at 10. Another Stevens field goal before halftime gave Washington a 13-10 lead at the break
Two more field goals would increase the Commanders lead to 19-10 before Rashad White iced the game with a one yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
