The Matchup to Watch
The biggest question is whether Washington can hold up against Philadelphia’s defense long enough to let its offense settle into the game.
The Eagles remain talented on that side of the ball, and Lincoln Financial Field is rarely a comfortable place for visiting quarterbacks. Washington cannot afford to spend the first quarter dealing with false starts, protection breakdowns and third-and-long situations.
If the Commanders can stay on schedule offensively and avoid giving Philadelphia short fields, this should remain competitive deep into the second half.
Commanders vs. Eagles Prediction
Philadelphia enters Sunday as the favorite, and that makes sense given the setting and the Eagles’ recent track record inside the division.
Still, this feels like the kind of opener where Washington has a chance to make things uncomfortable.
Week 1 tends to produce strange football. Teams are still figuring out what they actually have, coordinators are showing things they kept hidden all summer and nobody has much current film to work with.
Washington does not need to play a perfect game.
It just needs to survive the early Philadelphia punch and give itself a chance late.
