The Washington Commanders wrapped up rookie minicamp over the weekend, and while it is still far too early to draw major conclusions, several early signs matched exactly what the organization and fans hoped to see.
In the latest episode of Commanders Daily, Bob Matthews focused heavily on first-round linebacker Sunny Styles, who immediately stood out physically and athletically during rookie workouts.
Styles, the No. 7 overall pick out of Ohio State, consistently drew praise from reporters and evaluators in attendance. Matthews pointed to multiple clips and observations showing Styles around the ball throughout camp, using his size, speed, and instincts to separate himself quickly from the rest of the rookie group.
That is exactly what Washington wanted to see.
As Matthews explained, the expectation for a top-10 pick is not simply participation. The expectation is dominance against rookie competition, particularly against late-round picks and undrafted free agents trying to earn roster spots. Styles cleared that early benchmark comfortably. The reviews extended beyond Washington’s building as well. NFL Draft evaluator Ryan Fowler described Styles as “different” in person because of how smoothly he moves at nearly 245 pounds.
The rookie class as a whole also continues reinforcing what Adam Peters emphasized throughout the offseason: getting younger and getting faster. Running back Kaytron Allen, wide receiver Antonio Williams, and several undrafted players reportedly flashed during camp, while national analysts have continued praising Washington’s offseason approach following the draft and free agency.
Matthews also revisited the ongoing conversation surrounding veteran receiver Stefon Diggs, who recently acknowledged his ties to the DMV area and left the door open to potentially considering Washington later this offseason.
Diggs, a Maryland product coming off another productive season, remains one of the more intriguing veteran options available if Washington decides to add another receiver opposite Terry McLaurin before training camp begins.
For now, though, rookie minicamp offered the first glimpse of what this roster is starting to become.
The Commanders spent the offseason rebuilding around speed, athleticism, and versatility. Early returns may only be a small sample, but so far, the organization appears to be seeing exactly what it hoped for. Matthews breaks down the full minicamp reaction and the latest Stefon Diggs discussion in the episode below.
