The Commanders reached a new low point Sunday, falling 31–0 to the Minnesota Vikings in one of the most lopsided and demoralizing performances the franchise has produced in years. On today’s episode of Commanders Daily, Bob Matthews breaks down the shutout loss, calling it a collapse that ranks among the worst in the last quarter century.
While Jayden Daniels and the young offense struggled, Matthews stresses that the defense was the true source of Washington’s unraveling. Daniels finished just 9 of 20 for 78 yards and an interception before exiting in the third quarter, yet even the rookie’s uneven outing wasn’t the primary issue. Minnesota quarterback J.J. McCarthy — who had never looked comfortable all season — completed 16 of 23 for 163 yards and looked like a seasoned veteran against a Commanders defense that simply could not get off the field.
Matthews highlights Minnesota’s 19-play, 98-yard touchdown drive as the moment the game effectively ended. Washington repeatedly forced third downs, only to allow conversion after conversion. Despite simplifying the scheme and leaning heavily on zone coverage in recent weeks, the Commanders’ defensive personnel issues remain overwhelming. Injuries have hurt, but the absence of high-end depth and NFL-caliber starters across the secondary, linebacker group, and edge positions is even more glaring.
Offensively, early red-zone failures proved costly. A promising 15-play opening drive ended with four straight incompletions at the Minnesota two-yard line. Another turnover on downs followed shortly after, and Washington never recovered.
Matthews argues that Daniels must continue to play when healthy, emphasizing the need for chemistry with Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, and Washington’s young receivers as the team builds toward 2026.
As for the offseason, the assignment for Adam Peters and Dan Quinn is clear: this defense must be rebuilt — aggressively. With a likely top-five draft pick and significant cap flexibility, Washington will have options, but the overhaul must be sweeping.
