Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained a knee injury in Thursday night’s 28-17 loss to Green Bay. Head Coach Dan Quinn characterized the injury as day-to-day during his Monday press conference.
“He did have an MRI and he has already begun his return to play process,” Quinn said.
“What does that mean for Sunday? I can’t tell you that now. I’ll have more to share when we get to Wednesday and practice and what that would look like,” he added.
Daniels appeared to get hurt while scrambling late in the fourth quarter. Packers defensive end Kingsley Enagbare brought him down with a hip-drop tackle, landing on the quarterback’s legs. The tackle is illegal, but no penalty was called.
Quinn also confirmed that running back Austin Ekeler is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon and defensive lineman Detrich Wise Jr. will miss the year with a quad injury. Both were placed on season-ending injured reserve Monday.
To fill the roster holes, Washington signed defensive end Jaylyn Holmes and wide receiver Chris Moore from the practice squad, while also adding running back Chase Edmonds to the practice squad.
While the full extent of Daniels’ injury is unclear, The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala and Dianna Russini report it is not considered serious. Daniels was seen limping noticeably in the media room at Lambeau Field after Thursday’s game.
If league officials determine Enagbare used a hip-drop tackle, he could face a fine of up to $17,389 under the NFL’s discipline schedule.
If Daniels cannot go this Sunday, veteran backup Marcus Mariota would get the start. Mariota missed most of training camp with a lingering leg injury.
