Jaguars Emphasize Preparation Ahead of 49ers Clash

Jaguars defenders prepare for a key matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars enter Week 4 as the NFL’s leader in takeaways, a defensive identity that has fueled their strong start. But against the San Francisco 49ers, the Jaguars know the challenge rises to another level. San Francisco’s offense, led by head coach Kyle Shanahan, thrives on creativity and relentless pressure.

Defensive lineman Arik Armstead stressed the importance of playing together rather than zeroing in on a single matchup.

“They have a lot of great players and if you just key in on one player, then that opens things up,” Armstead said. “So it’s about just playing team defense. Obviously, it starts with stopping the run, and then putting pressure on whoever’s at quarterback.”

Armstead also praised Shanahan’s reputation as one of the league’s most effective offensive minds.

“He’s excellent. I think his record speaks for itself,” Armstead noted. “He’s an offensive wizard and a great coach. We’re excited about the challenge. It’ll be a lot of different looks for us than we’ve gotten the first three weeks.”

For Jacksonville’s front seven, maintaining gap integrity and continuing their opportunistic style will be critical. With playmakers like Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, discipline will be just as important as effort.

Linebacker Devin Lloyd acknowledged the difficulty of defending McCaffrey’s dual-threat ability.

“He’s just such a threat in the pass game, and in the run game as well,” Lloyd said. “He’s got really good vision, and obviously in the pass game, we know he’s definitely a threat. Just an all-around back, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Offense Working to Eliminate Mistakes

While the defense has excelled, the Jaguars’ offense knows it must reduce costly mistakes to keep pace with the 49ers. Offensive lineman Anton Harrison pointed to penalties as a major area of emphasis.

“Oh, we definitely have to clean it up,” Harrison said. “It all comes with practice. Knowing when to move and when not to move, looking at who’s set and who’s not set—just little things like that. We’re going to get it right.”

Harrison also highlighted San Francisco’s physical defensive front, including linebacker Fred Warner.

“Obviously they got Fred Warner. He’s a freak athlete, a great player, smart sideline to sideline,” Harrison explained. “They’re probably the biggest rushers we’ve played so far this season. Interior, they’re a penetrating front—aggressive; they want to get to the ball, sack the quarterback on the way there.”

Individual Matchups to Watch

Pass rusher Josh Hines-Allen circled his duel with 49ers left tackle Trent Williams, a perennial Pro Bowler.

“Future Hall of Famer. Much respect to him,” Hines-Allen said. “Ready to go to war. He has tremendous feet, he’s very fast, agile. I’ve played against him before. I’m very confident going into this game. I’m ready to work.”

Hines-Allen also noted that San Francisco’s offensive line maintains its identity regardless of personnel.

“They do a good job of sticking to what they do best,” Hines-Allen said. “We just have to be sound in our technique and final alignment. Anticipate the shifts, anticipate the changes, and play fast.”

Conclusion

The Jaguars’ preparation for San Francisco underscores their growth under head coach Liam Coen. The defense’s knack for forcing turnovers, combined with a focus on discipline and execution, will be essential in what promises to be one of the season’s toughest matchups. Jacksonville knows the 49ers will test every aspect of their game—but they also believe preparation will be the difference.
