Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen etched his name in franchise history on Sunday night, hauling in his 956th career catch to surpass former teammate Antonio Gates as the team’s all-time leader in receptions. The milestone came in a dominant 25-10 home victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it was celebrated fittingly—with Allen’s teammates swarming him and showering the veteran receiver in applause and admiration.
A Record Years in the Making
When asked how it felt to officially own the record, Allen didn’t overthink the moment but still recognized its significance.
“Great,” Allen said with a smile. “A catch is a catch. Obviously, the two catches were hard enough to get to begin with. It was a couple of plays that should have been just gimmes, but the defense played them well—tip ball, sack, whatever.”
Allen’s achievement nearly didn’t happen that night. With the Chargers comfortably ahead late in the fourth quarter, Allen approached Head Coach Jim Harbaugh on the sideline with an idea.
“The game is the game,” Allen explained. “At the end of the game, we’re up by a lot of points. I’m like, hey, we just do a speed sweep or something, just try to get this out the way so we can go ahead about the game plan. But yeah, I’m just glad we were able to get it done.”
His 956th reception put him past Gates, a legendary tight end and Hall of Famer who once held the record at 955. Fittingly, Gates was in attendance at SoFi Stadium to witness the moment firsthand.

Milestones, Legacy, and Longevity
This isn’t the first time Allen has rewritten the Chargers’ record book. In 2023, he became the first receiver in franchise history to eclipse 10,000 receiving yards, doing so in a primetime matchup against the New York Jets.
“Those are milestones that not a lot of people reach,” Allen said. “Even the greats don’t always get there. But we were able to do it, and hats off to Antonio [Gates], Philip [Rivers], and Herbert throwing the ball—I appreciate those guys.”
Allen’s 956 catches came in 87 fewer games than it took Gates, a testament to his precision, durability, and connection with multiple quarterbacks over the years. The 33-year-old also recently joined the exclusive 400-400 club, becoming the only player in NFL history with at least 400 receptions from two different quarterbacks—Rivers and Herbert.
Teammates Celebrate the Moment
For Justin Herbert, who has built a strong bond with Allen since his rookie season, the milestone was emotional.
“Just very fortunate to have him,” Herbert said. “He’s a true pro and he’s taught me so much about the game. His understanding of routes and coverages is second to none. Nobody deserves it more than him.”
Allen admitted that sharing the moment with his teammates made it unforgettable.
“Yeah, I think that was the best part,” he said. “Through it all, being with the guys, seeing their emotions, making it a special moment.”
As SoFi Stadium roared, Keenan Allen stood surrounded by teammates and fans, etched in Chargers history as the franchise’s all-time receptions leader, a milestone of excellence earned through consistency, professionalism, and heart.
