In a debut season that has captured the attention of drag racing’s elite competitors, Spencer Hyde from Stratford, Ontario has distinguished himself as the premier first-year driver in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Behind the wheel of the Head Inc. Funny Car, prepared by Hall of Fame crew chief Jim Head, the Canadian has delivered performances that have resonated throughout the nitro racing community.
Hyde’s maiden campaign includes a triumph at the Las Vegas Four-Wide Nationals Mission #2Fast2Tasty event, multiple semifinal appearances, a pair of championship round showings, and a Countdown to the Championship berth within the top ten. His crowning qualifying achievement came at the Reading Nationals, where he claimed the number one position heading into the opening playoff contest.
“I feel like I have proven myself race after race driving this Funny Car, which arguably is the toughest race car to drive,” Hyde stated. “I have won a lot of races leading up to my jump to Funny Car, but this was a whole new animal. Thanks to Jim and the team for giving me a good car I think I proved myself in one of the toughest classes in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.”
The statistics support Hyde’s self-assessment. Against championship-caliber opposition, the rookie has competed toe-to-toe with legendary names: splitting contests with Jack Beckman (1-1), maintaining parity with Ron Capps (2-2), and holding even against Austin Prock (1-1). Additionally, Hyde boasts undefeated records in his singular encounters with both Matt Hagan (1-0) and Cruz Pedregon (1-0).
Four-time champion Hagan has taken particular notice of the newcomer’s trajectory. “Spencer came from the Pro Mod side of things much like myself, so I have a little bit of love there for him because I ran a Pro Mod for six years before stepping up in the Funny Car,” Hagan explained. “He’s showing that he can handle the race car. He keeps it in his lane, cuts good lights and he’s a great competitor so I’m always looking forward to racing that guy and he’s good for the sport. We need new young guys out here who are eager and hungry. He’s doing a great job behind the wheel, so I think he’s a great candidate for rookie of the year.”
Two-time champion Jack Beckman, whose experience includes over twenty years as an instructor at the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School, offered an unequivocal endorsement. “I think there’s only one viable candidate. I said it on stage during driver intros at St. Louis when Spencer and I were introduced together,” Beckman recalled. “I said, ‘I don’t gamble but, if I had to bet money, I’m standing next to the rookie of the year this year.’ That’s how good Spencer has been.”
Hyde returns to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway—site of his earlier season victory—for the Dodge NHRA Nevada Nationals, October 31 through November 2, seeking to punctuate his breakthrough campaign with another trophy
