The Top Fuel category has always been defined by momentum. When a team finds its rhythm, wins can come in bunches, confidence grows, and records begin to fall. That is exactly what is happening with Shawn Langdon and the Kalitta Air Careers Top Fuel team.
At the NHRA Potomac Nationals, Langdon delivered a weekend that showcased not only championship-caliber consistency but outright dominance. By the time eliminations concluded, Langdon had secured his third consecutive Top Fuel victory, his third No. 1 qualifier of the season, and the 25th No. 1 qualifier of his NHRA career. More impressively, he left Maryland with his name attached to the track record book.
A Record-Setting Performance in Qualifying
Langdon wasted little time establishing himself as the driver to beat. During Friday afternoon’s second qualifying session, he piloted his Kalitta Air Careers dragster to a blistering 3.758-second pass at 336.23 mph, setting both the elapsed time and speed records for Top Fuel at the facility.
For most teams, that run would have been the highlight of the weekend. For Langdon, it became merely the starting point.
During the fourth and final qualifying session, he returned to the starting line and lowered the elapsed time mark even further, posting a remarkable 3.744-second run. By improving upon his own record, Langdon sent a clear message to the rest of the field: if anyone wanted to leave Maryland with a trophy, they would have to go through the quickest car at the track.
The performance secured the No. 1 qualifying position and gave Langdon a critical advantage heading into race day. More importantly, it reinforced what many in the NHRA paddock are beginning to realize—the Kalitta organization is operating at an elite level.
A Team Operating at Championship Speed
While Langdon’s driving has been exceptional, he was quick to credit the people surrounding him after capturing his third consecutive victory.
“That was a little too close for comfort, but when you race Doug Kalitta and (Crew Chief) Alan Johnson, you better be on your A game. Man, our Kalitta Air Careers team has been so good lately. They’ve given me a better race car than I deserve, but for all our partners, everybody at Kalitta Air, DHL, Mac Tools, Revchem and SealMaster, three in a row is bad ass – give it the hat trick!”
Success extends beyond a single car. Kalitta Motorsports has now captured four consecutive Top Fuel victories as an organization, a testament to the collaborative culture built throughout the program.
Langdon pointed to the addition of championship-winning crew chiefs and support personnel as a major reason for the team’s rise.
“I think, a couple of years ago, bringing over Alan Johnson and (Crew Chief) Brian Husen and then (Mac Tools Crew Chief) Mac Savage on Doug’s car and (Assistant Crew Chiefs) Aaron Cave and Justin Groat on our car and all of our crew guys. It’s getting all the right guys together, and we really have, just across the board, including the DHL (Funny Car) team, three great groups of guys.”
Momentum Is a Powerful Thing
The most dangerous teams in motorsports are often the ones that understand how difficult success can be to sustain. Despite winning three consecutive races, Langdon remains focused on continuous improvement.
“Winning cures about everything; this year’s been unbelievable. We had one little hiccup at the first race, but that’s just how good the team is – they bounced back, and now we’ve won three in a row.”
That mindset may be the biggest reason why this streak continues. The team celebrates victories but immediately begins searching for ways to improve.
With three straight wins, multiple track records, and a race car that appears capable of outrunning anyone in the category, Langdon has positioned himself as the driver everyone will be chasing as the NHRA season moves forward. If the performance at the Potomac Nationals was any indication, the wave Langdon described may be far from over.
