Three Storylines to Watch at the NHRA Gatornationals

The 75th NHRA season officially roars to life at the AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, one of the most historic and unpredictable events on the Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series calendar. Gainesville Raceway has long been the site of season-defining moments, emotional returns, and breakout performances.

As the 2026 season begins, several compelling storylines are already emerging in the professional ranks. From championship contenders carrying offseason momentum to emotional comebacks and rookie debuts, the Gatornationals will once again set the tone for the year ahead.

Here are three storylines worth watching closely this weekend.

Aaron Stanfield Carries Offseason Momentum Into Pro Stock

Few drivers enter the NHRA season with as much momentum as Aaron Stanfield. The Elite Motorsports standout recently captured a victory at the Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod, adding another layer of confidence heading into the Pro Stock opener.

Elite Motorsports has built a reputation for starting seasons strong. Erica Enders opened the 2024 campaign with a victory at the PRO Superstar Shootout, while Troy Coughlin Jr. followed suit with a win in 2025 at the same Bradenton Motorsports Park event.

Stanfield’s offseason success came during the Drag Illustrated Winter Series, where perseverance paid off after a difficult start.

“I kept my competitive spirit alive during the off season running in the Drag illustrated Winter Series. We ran three races and we missed the field in the first two. But in the first Pro Mod race I’ve ever qualified for, I won it,” Stanfield said. “The World Series of Pro Mod was an incredible event. First off to have Richard [Freeman] have the confidence in me to put me in a Pro Mod car this off season and then he told me I was going to win if I got qualified. To have him have my back like that and give me the opportunity is amazing.

“I’m hungry for some more,” Stanfield continued. “It’s never enough. Its great momentum coming into the NHRA season. We’ve got our heads down and we’re on a mission this year.”

Stanfield finished the 2025 NHRA season fourth in the championship standings, the best result among Elite Motorsports’ Pro Stock entries. Driving the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage / Melling Performance / Janac Brothers machine, Stanfield reached two final rounds and added five semifinal appearances.

After qualifying No. 11 and exiting in the first round at the 2025 Gatornationals, Stanfield will look to turn that experience into a stronger performance this time around.

Leah Pruett Returns to the Seat in Top Fuel

One of the most emotional moments of the weekend will come on Friday during the first Top Fuel qualifying session when Leah Pruett returns to competition.

The 12-time Top Fuel national event winner has not competed since stepping away from driving in 2023 to start her family. Her return with Tony Stewart Racing instantly adds another championship-caliber driver to an already stacked Top Fuel field.

“To say this race is just like any other would be a massive understatement. I’ve been working for months to be prepared for this weekend. The anticipation is high. I’m going to have to try and lie to my body, tell it that it’s just another race,” Pruett said. “I haven’t made a side-by-side pass with someone in years, so I am very much looking forward to that, and the cadence of a race weekend. The competitive spirit inside of me has been reignited in a way that only driving a Top Fuel dragster with this team can do.”

Preparation for the return has included extensive testing at Gainesville Raceway. Pruett and the Tony Stewart Racing team completed six days of testing at the historic facility leading up to the event.

“The test sessions have been very promising in so many ways both with the car and the team performance wise. It’s shown me that some things I’ve been working on in the off season have worked, and others I’ve had to scrap and regroup, and continue to fine tune; all the way down to the last testing day,” Pruett said. “Gainesville and the Gatornationals has always stood for new beginnings for me. From the first time I drove a Pro Mod, to launching TSR Nitro, to now and my return to the seat. I’ve never won this race, but it would be a huge milestone in and of itself. Our goals will be the same as they’ve always been, good full pulls, low qualifying times, keeping my reaction times low, and turning on win lights.”

Maddi Gordon Begins a New Chapter in Top Fuel

Another compelling storyline comes from a new generation entering the sport’s most powerful category.

Maddi Gordon will make her professional Top Fuel debut driving the Carlyle Tools dragster for Ron Capps Motorsports at the Gatornationals. The third-generation racer enters the event with momentum from testing and a lifetime of experience around NHRA competition.

“Getting back in my Carlyle Tools Top Fuel dragster yesterday after that first week of testing felt really good. I’m feeling more and more comfortable in the car each time I strap in, and every pass I make down the track, I learn something new and take something back with me. The last test session was all about getting comfortable, doing my procedures, and overall, just getting acclimated and used to driving a Top Fuel car. This week, I’m more focused on cutting lights. I was .81 yesterday the first time I tried to cut a light, and I was happy with that. Obviously, I’m going to be working to improve but felt for my first time, that was pretty solid. The second pass I was late, and I knew it, and then on the third pass, I ran an .85.

“It’s going to be so cool rolling into the track on Friday morning when the pits are fully set up and seeing the RCM hospitality tent and the whole RCM empire; it’s just going to be very surreal. I’ve driven through the pro pits my whole life and have always admired how professional it looks, and to now be able to have my name on one of those banners and my face on one of those trailers is so cool. There’s just so many things that are going to be a totally new experience for me this weekend. For example, I’ve never done driver intros, I’ve never raced E1 on a Sunday morning, so, it’s hard to pinpoint what all I’m looking forward to the most.

“This weekend is all about racing our own race. We’re not out there running in the 60s yet. I have no doubt we’ll get there, but right now we’ve got so many new parts and pieces that we’re focused on making full runs and getting down the track, getting me more comfortable in the car, getting our guys used to the routine, and gathering data. We’re going to do the best that we can and I’ve got all the confidence that we’ll be competing with the best of them on Sunday.”

From Stanfield’s momentum to Pruett’s long-awaited return and Gordon’s Top Fuel debut, the AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals once again delivers a powerful mix of storylines. As engines fire in Gainesville, these narratives could shape not only the opening weekend but the entire 2026 NHRA season.
