Von Miller is officially a Washington Commander. Not for a farewell tour. Not for a paycheck. He’s here because he believes in what’s being built and to compete for a postseason run. And that might be the most important part of all this.
At this point in his career, Miller isn’t expected to be the dominant force he once was. He’s 35 years old and coming off a year where injuries limited his production. But even in a reduced role, his value is undeniable. He still has enough left to make an impact as a situational pass rusher. More importantly, he brings experience, leadership, and a championship mentality to a young defensive line that’s looking for direction.
If Miller gives Washington even five or six sacks and comes through in key moments, that’s a win on its own. But the significance of this signing goes beyond numbers or schemes. It speaks to something much bigger. For the first time in a long time, future Hall of Famers across the league are choosing to come to Washington.
That hasn’t happened in years. This franchise spent the better part of two decades repelling top talent. Star players left as soon as they could. Free agents only came when there were no better options. The organization lacked structure, credibility, and vision.
However, the 180-degree shift has now been completed.
This time, a veteran with options looked at Washington and saw something worth joining. He saw Dan Quinn. He saw a competent front office led by Adam Peters. He saw a team that has quietly built one of the better offseason teams in the league. And he saw a locker room that could benefit from someone who’s won at the highest level and knows what it takes.
That kind of presence is hard to measure, but it’s easy to feel inside a building. Von Miller won’t just impact games. He will impact preparation. He will impact younger players, teaching them how to be professionals. He will raise the standard for how things are done. That is the kind of influence this team has been missing.
The Commanders are still a work in progress. They are learning how to win again. But the addition of Miller, along with other smart moves this offseason, suggests that history over the last 25+ years doesn’t seem bound to repeat itself this time.
Players around the league are watching. And now, instead of laughing off Washington as a dead-end destination, they are starting to take it seriously again.
Von Miller chose the Commanders. Not because he had to. Because he wanted to. That alone says a great deal about where this team is headed.
