The Washington Redskins take on the Denver Broncos tonight in a game where both teams’ starters will see extended playing time.

Here are three things to know about the Broncos leading up to their matchup against the Redskins:

1. Case Keenum is the Broncos’ new starting quarterback

The former Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback that led the team to the NFC Championship and delivered the ‘Minnesota Miracle’ is the new starting quarterback for the Broncos. This is the first time in Keenum’s NFL career that he is unquestionably the starter. So far, he has shown improvement from last year in training camp and the first few preseason games. With this particular matchup being called a “dress rehearsal” for the Broncos, Keenum is seeking to prove that he is a long-term option for the team. It will be interesting to watch how he performs against the Redskins defense.

2. WR Demaryius Thomas is returning at full capacity

Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is one of their premier playmakers. Thomas played with a lot of injuries last year including a hip injury. After going through a radical lifestyle change in the offseason that improved his body, Thomas has been healthy throughout training camp. However, he sat out last Saturday’s preseason game against the Bears with a wrist injury.

Redskins Gruden: Thompson, Reed and McGee will not play vs. Broncos

Thomas will return to the field against the Redskins. This is key for the Redskins cornerbacks to pay attention to because the Broncos wide receiver depth has been impressive without much action from Thomas. Now that he is returning to the lineup, he will have a chance to show what he is capable of at full capacity in partnership with the other wide receivers who have been stepping up for the Broncos.

3. Broncos’ defense wants to build their identity around stopping the run

The Broncos are seeking to build their identity around stopping the run and Coach Vance Joseph said the following recently:

“Stopping the run, that’s the key,” Joseph said. “Stopping the run and putting the offense in a one-dimensional phase – making them be a passing team so we can rush the passer. If we play with a lead, we can get after the quarterback pretty good.”

The Broncos defense is set to be at full strength against the Redskins. With the run game still coming together, you can expect the Broncos to test this philosophy against running backs Robert Kelley, Adrian Peterson and company. On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that no starting pass rusher for the Broncos has recorded a sack in the last two preseason games.
