The Washington Commanders won’t ease into the 2026 season. Not even close.
When the NFL officially released the full schedule Wednesday night, Washington was handed one of the more fascinating opening stretches in football — two straight road games against division rivals, an early international trip to London, multiple primetime matchups and a late-season stretch that will likely shape the NFC playoff picture.
For a team trying to prove last season was the start of something sustainable and not a one-year spike, the road ahead is going to demand toughness immediately.
Washington opens the season with back-to-back NFC East road games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys before finally returning home in Week 3 for a matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. It marks the first time since 2012 that Washington will begin a season with two consecutive road games, and the first time since 2019 they’ll open with back-to-back divisional contests.
That opening month gets even stranger.
In Week 4, the Commanders head to London to face the Indianapolis Colts in the franchise’s first London appearance since 2017. It also means Washington will technically have just two true home games through the first seven weeks of the season.
The schedule does offer opportunity, however. Washington will play seven standalone games this season, including four primetime contests, a sign that the franchises offseason and Jayden Daniels shine has regained national relevance after a major disappointment in 2025. Matchups against the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals will all land in primetime slots.
The Week 8 Sunday Night Football showdown against Philadelphia especially stands out. By that point, Washington will already have faced the Eagles twice in the season’s first eight weeks, creating the possibility for the division race to take a deeper shape unusually early in the year.
There are also several stretches that could define the season. Weeks 10 and 11 feature back-to-back primetime games against the Giants and Bengals. Washington also gets an extended 11-day break between those matchups after playing Thursday night in New York and then Monday night at home against Cincinnati.
Late in the year, the Commanders close with road trips to the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars before finishing the regular season at home against Dallas in Week 18. It’s the fourth time in the last five years Washington and Dallas will meet in the regular-season finale.
One thing is clear after looking at the full slate: the NFL believes Washington will matter again. The Commanders aren’t being treated like the 5-12 team of last year, rather they’re getting standalone windows, major division showcases, international exposure and meaningful late-season slots. Now comes the part that fans will be eager to see: proving they belong there.
