With just over three weeks until the NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders are entering the phase where scenarios start to take shape into gameplans.
In the latest episode of Commanders Daily, Bob Matthews focuses on what may ultimately define this offseason: what Washington does with the No. 7 overall pick.
The early sense is clear. Staying put appears to be the preferred approach, but the decision is everything but simple when trying to find the intersection of need and best man available. One name firmly in the mix is Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate, a prospect expected to come off the board early. The Commanders have shown interest, but they are far from alone.
Multiple teams picking ahead of Washington are also evaluating Tate, including organizations with clear needs at the position. That creates a real possibility he is gone before No. 7. That uncertainty is where the draft begins to open up. If Tate is available, Washington will have a straightforward decision to make. If he is not, the conversation shifts quickly to alternatives, including the possibility of moving back and adding draft capital. But to move backwards or forward in any draft, Adam Peters will need a dance partner. That option carries its own risk.
Dropping down the board could help address multiple needs, but it also means passing on top-tier talent in a draft where the elite tier is limited. That balance is central to how the Commanders will approach the first round.
There are also lingering roster questions beyond the draft.
Head coach Dan Quinn recently left the door open on a potential return for veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner, suggesting the organization has not fully closed the book on that possibility. Whether that turns into a move likely depends on how the roster develops over the coming months. For now, the focus remains on the board. The Commanders are entering a stretch where the decisions become clearer, but the margin for error does not.
