Five Things to Watch in the Falcons’ Season Opener vs. the Buccaneers

The Atlanta Falcons will open their 2025 campaign at home on Sunday, September 7, against the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unlike Tampa, which reached the postseason last year, the Falcons fell short at 8-9, finishing second in the division.

With a new season about to begin, here are five storylines to watch in Atlanta’s opener.

1. Michael Penix Jr.’s Big Stage Debut
The Falcons have officially handed the keys of the franchise to Michael Penix Jr., their 2024 first-round pick. Sunday, marks his first start as the unquestioned QB1. How he commands the huddle, stretches the field with his arm, and handles Tampa’s pass rush will set the tone for Atlanta’s season.

2. Jessie Bates: Takeaway Machine
Few defenders in the league swing momentum like Jessie Bates III. Coming off a Pro Bowl season, the veteran safety will be tasked with limiting Tampa Bay’s passing attack while hunting for takeaways. If Bates delivers, it could tilt the game in Atlanta’s favor.

3. Protecting Penix
Atlanta’s offensive line faces a major early test. Right tackle Kaleb McGary is out for the season, and his backup, Storm Norton, is also sidelined. That leaves veteran Elijah Wilkinson, stepping into a critical role. How well the line protects Penix could be the difference between a smooth debut and a long afternoon.

4. A.J. Terrell and the Secondary
With depth concerns at cornerback, the Falcons will lean heavily on A.J. Terrell to contain Tampa’s veteran receivers, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin. If Terrell holds his ground, Atlanta’s defense has a real chance to control the game.

5. Atlanta’s Week 1 Curse
Season openers haven’t been kind to the Falcons. Since 2015, they’ve gone just 3-7 in Week 1, and endured a five-game losing streak between 2018 and 2022. Playing at home gives them an edge, but can they finally flip the script and start 1-0?
