The Washington Commanders finally made the move many fans were waiting for.
After a relatively quiet start to free agency, general manager Adam Peters delivered a significant addition to the defense by agreeing to a deal with linebacker Leo Chenal. The signing addresses one of the roster’s biggest needs and could dramatically reshape the middle of Washington’s defense.
In the latest episode of Commanders Daily, Bob Matthews breaks down why Chenal may be one of the most important additions of the offseason.
The former Kansas City linebacker brings the kind of speed and coverage ability that Washington struggled with at the position last season. Matthews notes that Chenal’s performance metrics show a defender capable of rushing the passer, stopping the run, and holding up in coverage — a combination the Commanders lacked in the middle of their defense.
The move also adds another key piece alongside recent additions like Odafe Oweh and defensive back Amik Robertson, giving Washington a clearer identity on defense heading into the draft.
With edge rusher and linebacker now strengthened, the Commanders may have more flexibility when the first round arrives. Washington could double down on defense or pivot toward offensive help such as wide receiver.
One name still frequently mentioned is Brandon Aiyuk, whose connection with Peters and quarterback Jayden Daniels continues to fuel speculation.
Free agency is far from over, but Day 2 may have given Washington one of its most important upgrades yet. Matthews breaks down the signing, the strategy behind it, and what it means for the Commanders moving forward.
