The Washington Commanders continued an active stretch in free agency, and the overall strategy from general manager Adam Peters is becoming clearer with each move. In the latest episode of Commander Daily, Bob Matthews breaks down several additions that could significantly reshape Washington’s roster heading into the 2026 season.
The Commanders agreed to terms with defensive end Charles Omenihu, adding depth to the defensive line on a one-year deal worth $4 million with incentives. Omenihu profiles as a strong rotational piece, particularly against the run, giving Washington more flexibility along the edge.
Washington also added tight end Chig Okonkwo, a move designed to give quarterback Jayden Daniels another receiving weapon. Okonkwo has quietly produced throughout his career, posting at least 400 receiving yards in each of his first four NFL seasons. His ability to win contested catches and stretch the middle of the field could make him a valuable piece in the Commanders’ offense.
On defense, the team continued to add speed and youth. Safety Nick Cross joins the secondary and brings versatility as both a box safety and coverage option. The Commanders also added edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson, who emerged as an impactful pass rusher last season.
When combined with previous additions like linebacker Leo Chenal, Washington may have added as many as five new defensive starters through free agency alone.
That aggressive approach gives the Commanders flexibility heading into the NFL Draft. With several defensive needs addressed, Washington could target a wide receiver early, add another impact defender, or even trade down to accumulate additional draft capital.
Matthews breaks down the full strategy and what it could mean for the Commanders moving forward in the latest episode below.
