Giants Fined $200K for Concussion Protocol Violation

The NFL fined the New York Giants $200,000 for breaking the league’s concussion protocol during their Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, the league announced Friday.

Head coach Brian Daboll was fined $100,000, and running back Cam Skattebo received a $15,000 fine for conduct detrimental to the league. The penalties followed a joint review by the NFL and NFL Players Association (NFLPA).

Review Found Improper Access to Medical Tent

The review confirmed that the Giants’ medical team and independent doctors followed every required step of the concussion protocol for quarterback Jaxson Dart. However, both Daboll and Skattebo entered the sideline blue medical tent before Dart’s exam ended, which broke the rules.

The joint statement said their presence “created the perception that they were interfering with Dart’s exam,” though neither affected his care.

The concussion protocol allows only key medical personnel inside the tent or locker room during an evaluation. That includes the team physician, athletic trainer, and the Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant (UNC). No other individuals are allowed.

Giants Take Action After Violation

The NFL and NFLPA noted that the Giants quickly took steps to prevent this from happening again. The team conducted extra training for staff and players and tightened access to the medical tent.

Daboll apologized after the game, saying he only wanted to check on his quarterback.

“I just stuck my head in to see how our quarterback was doing,” Daboll said. “In no way would I want a player to come back out there that wasn’t ready to play. I have great respect for that process.”

Giants owner John Mara later said Daboll’s actions were “inappropriate” but confirmed the team cooperated fully with the league’s review.

Dart Returned After Evaluation

Dart left the game in the third quarter after being sacked by Eagles linebacker Patrick Johnson. He was examined in the blue tent, cleared, and returned to finish the contest — a 28-20 victory for New York.

The fines come days before the Giants (2-5) visit the Eagles (5-2) again Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
